چکیده

The procedure of inserting tunnelled central venous catheters was once carried out by surgeons or radiologists at Glasgow NHS Trust. However, increased workloads meant that these health care professionals were left with less time to devote to these procedures, which resulted in unacceptable waiting times for those requiring them. After visiting several centres in England where nurses were already successfully inserting tunnelled central venous catheters with impressive audit results, we decided to set up a similar service. Following a successful bid for funding we now have a nurse-led service for the insertion of tunnelled central venous catheters with minimal waiting times and low complication rates.

A prospective observational study of catheter-related bacteraemia and thrombosis in a haemodialysis cohort: univariate and multivariate analyses of risk association.

BACKGROUND Central venous catheterization is a fundamental component in delivering haemodialysis yet is associated with significantly higher complication rates than other methods of vascular access. In this study, we report results of univariate and multivariate analyses designed to identify and quantify independent risk association for catheterization type, clinical variables and laboratory va...

Percutaneous Insertion of Hickman Central Venous Catheter: Jugular Approach

Traditionally, tunnelled central venous catheter insertions have been performed by surgeons. However, there is an increasing trend towards central catheters being placed by interventional radiologists under image guidance. The many advantages of inserting central catheters via the jugular approach under image guidance include reusable venous access, generally less waiting time compared with sur...

Single-centre experience with tunnelled central venous catheters in 150 cancer patients.

BACKGROUND Tunnelled venous catheters improve venous access in cancer patients, but are associated with complications. We retrospectively analysed the outcome of Hickman catheter and Port-A-Cath (PAC) insertion in cancer patients from a department of medical oncology and compared these results with the literature. METHODS The files of patients in whom insertion of a Hickman or PAC was planned...
